Sour crop is a yeast infection of the crop, caused by too much bad bacteria and yeast growing in the crop. The crop is a muscular pouch on the right side of the breast that holds food waiting to be digested. All birds have one. Sour crop can be caused by many things such as feed changes, indigestion, feed that has gone bad, moldy or bug ridden, blockages caused by eating long grass, or drinking from contaminated puddles.
You will identify sour crop as a full, squishy crop and a sour, vinegary smell coming from the mouth. The contents of her crop have become fermented and will quickly become toxic, often resulting in death, if you don't treat her immediately.
See our page on Illnesses of the Crop for information on treatment.
In our experience, sour crop has been the number one cause of death in poultry. Over the years, we have suffered several heartbreaking losses as a result of sour crop. Having tried many remedies, with little success, we have discovered Acidified Copper Sulphate can assist in the recovery from yeast and fungal infections of the digestive tract.
