Wyandotte

Wyandottes are an American breed developed in the 1860s. They were named by one of the first Wyandotte breeders, Houdlette, who named the breed after his father's ship the Wyandotte, which is a derived name of the American Indian Wendat tribe. However, the Wyandotte has no historical association with the tribe. The first Wyandottes to be bred were the Silver Laced and over time many more colour varieties have been developed.
Wyandottes are particularly well-suited for regions that have cold winters, with their large body weight and loose, fluffy feathering and their rose comb is less prone to frostbite.
At Sunset Croft, we breed both Gold Laced and Silver Laced and our birds are immensely popular and highly sought after. They are stunning birds with their striking gold or silver plumage, each feather edged in shimmering black, and in our opinion are the most beautiful chickens in the farmyard, both in looks and personality. They are very friendly and easy to handle, so make excellent pets.
Their docile nature and the utility value for the table makes them an excellent dual purpose breed for the backyard or lifestyle block. You can expect around 200 eggs per year. The hens, like most heavy breeds will go broody at some point and are devoted mothers.
Being a heavy breed, they will do better on a diet high in meat based protein. For this reason we use and recommend Weston Milling Poultry Feeds which can be purchased from us.
We will not be offering Silver Laced Wyandottes for season 2018.
