Healthy birds are productive, happy birds.
At Sunset Croft we use non-toxic and natural health and sanitation products wherever possible, and we stock a range of health essentials that we use and recommend and have proven effective.
A healthy chicken will stand erect and alert and look interested in her surroundings. Her feathers will be sleek and shiny, she will stand with her weight evenly balanced and will move around with the rest of the flock, exhibiting normal behaviours like eating, dust bathing and preening. A chicken who is unwell will stand apart from the flock, hunched with her tail down and show little interest in food.
What's wrong with my chicken?
There are many common health issues when keeping poultry and if you're not prepared, you risk losing your precious birds. Nature's law is survival of the fittest, and birds will conceal their illness in order to appear strong to the rest of the flock to avoid bullying and possible cannibalism or being plucked off by a predator. By the time you realise one is showing signs of ill health, it is often too late. With careful daily observation of your flock, you will become familiar with each bird's quirks, behaviour and personality and you will notice when something is not right.
Don't ignore it - Do something!
Don't assume that sick chickens will "get over it," as they quite often wont without intervention. By the time you notice a chicken is unwell, it is often too late, as they conceal their sickness to avoid being vulnerable to predators. Negligence or ignorance will cost you dearly in heartbreaking losses of livestock or your beloved pets.
