Experience the delight of raising your own flock from baby chicks.
Rearing chicks can be a wonderful experience for children and adults alike and its a delight to watch your fluffy babies grow and develop their quirks and personalities.
It is not possible to tell whether chicks are cocks or hens until they start growing and the physical differences become clear.
We recommend feeding your chicks Weston Milling Chicks Choice starter crumbles, which is a high protein complete feed to ensure strong growth and feather development and contains essential minerals and vitamins to provide all the nutritional requirements of baby chicks. It is medicated with a coccidiostat to help build resistance to Coccidiosis.
You can easily rear chicks in a plastic storage bin with an infra red or ceramic heat bulb. Normal light bulbs are too bright and interfere with their natural sleep rhythms, and energy saver and LED bulbs are not suitable as they do not emit heat. Line the bin with newspaper and cover with untreated wood shavings. Ensure the water bowl is shallow to prevent chicks drowning and place large marbles in the bowl to prevent chicks falling into the water, or use an appropriate plastic chick feeder and drinker. We use and strongly recommend Poultry Tonic added to the drinking water during their first weeks to give your chicks the essential nutrients for strong, healthy joints.
By two weeks old chicks can be put outdoors on sunny days in a safe enclosure and brought in at night. By the time they are feathered enough they can move to an outdoor run permanently. During the warmer months, depending on your local climate, this can be from about four weeks of age.

Essential for chicks
Poultry Tonic 200ml
A natural and organic liquid broad spectrum supplement for poultry which provides essential vitamins for your birds. Fermented in a process that mimics natural digestive processes, and is therefore highly palatable and enjoyed by most animals. Often poultry feeds lack vital nutrients, and chicks can be at risk of vitamin B deficiencies which lead to Perosis (slipped tendon), an irreversible condition affecting the hock joints. Perosis causes the joint to gradually twist out at a hideous angle, leaving the chick permanently crippled and the best thing you can do for the chick is to cull it. We have not had a single case of Slipped Tendon since using this product. We use and recommend Poultry Tonic for growing healthy chicks and also for adult birds who need a boost in times of stress, moulting or recovering from an illness. |
